Behind the work
About Dirry de Bruin.
Until a few years ago, Dirry de Bruin ran her own design studio in Rotterdam. She worked on a wide range of projects, from street furniture to commemorative objects, continually seeking ways to connect form and meaning. That search remains central to her work, although her practice has become freer, more personal and more intuitive.
Materiality and vulnerability play a central role. Dirry works closely with master glassblowers, exploring how traditional craftsmanship can meet a contemporary visual language. Her process is precise and focused: glass is ground by hand, wood polished and gold leaf carefully applied. This approach takes time and attention, qualities felt in the finished work. Each component has a clear role, creating a subtle tension between gloss and matt, old and new, fragility and strength.
Dirry’s choice of glass reflects her open, clear approach to being an artist. The Y-conical bell-shaped vases she developed are refined yet accessible: handcrafted without becoming nostalgic. Her online presence reflects the same care, with attention to detail, aesthetics and substance.
In this exhibition, Dirry’s love of form and material meets an almost ritual approach to making. Each object is unique and invites the viewer to slow down.
