Behind the work
About Frans Thevis.
Through his wife, Frans discovered ceramics at Stichting KREATIEF in his municipality at the beginning of this century. Inspired by regional ceramicists, he went on to the art academy in Maasmechelen, completing nine years of ceramics studies and receiving first prize from the professional jury. He then studied sculpture in Genk for seven years.
During his studies, he began building letters and punctuation marks, abstracting or cutting them apart and reassembling them in new ways. The resulting organic forms have a bold, robust appearance. Transparency, applied elements, a rough sintered-engobe surface and monochrome finishes give the work a certain ‘nakedness’. The work is not narrative and does not seek to convey a deeper meaning.
Influenced by his sculpture studies, he increasingly made torsos in different sizes with applied elements. His beautiful contemporary ceramics can be admired in our gallery. Frans can rightly be described as a late bloomer.
